A Lovely October day at Duncton

Duncton Oct 16 006

Just back from a great day at Duncton Mill Fishery. With a fine bag of Rainbows. If any would be fly fishers want a great day out at an outstanding trout fishery then please get in touch. With 4,clear, spring feed lakes to stalk and roam around this is an outstanding venue in West Sussex managed by Martin Fleetwood. No I’m not getting paid to promote this fishery. I just want to share it with any learners requiring guidance and hopefully get involved with catching a trout or two. The condition and feistyness of his fish are to be admired. Anyone interested in a guided day out please contact me.

Positive client feedback (Thanks Clive)

Hi Howie,

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I learnt a lot. Thanks for the links, I’m convinced that the knot you tied for the Clouser contributed a lot towards catching those Schoolies – I’ll try and perfect that and give it a go next week when I’m on the Towi fishing for Sea Trout. I hope that your Aberystwyth trip goes well, the river that I was trying to remember was the Rheidol and you can get access to it through the local angling club, the following link should give you an idea of their waters, including the Ystwyth as well as the Rheidol : http://www.aber-angling.co.uk/index.php?f=data_permits&a=1 a lot depends on rainfall though.

I hope to give those marks that you pointed out a go and I’ll keep my eyes peeled for you when I go there to say hello. I’ll try a few different flies for the Mullet and when I get one I’ll let you know. In the meantime look after yourself and many thanks for a great afternoon.

All the best

Clive.

Scoolies in the Adur

Guiding Clive 004]Fly fisherman Clive Eakins contacted me regarding saltwater fly fishing in the river Adur. So I chose a session on the falling tide today which was 3 hours into the ebb after a 5.2 high. This is a great time to fish these short tides as you get a chance to go for the mullet and bass as they seem to stay in the estuary longer. Although we did not connect with the mullet Clive did catch 4 schoolies.

Later I walked the river on the flood tide (without a rod) and it was stuffed with huge mullet. Could this be the start of a late seasons fishing on the Adur? Here’s of couple of pic’s of Clive.

Well done mate.Guiding Clive 001

Fish smoking

Really getting to grips with my Hot smoker now. Mine has 2 meths burners which need to be filled to the max to enable a burn time of about 4o minutes. Enough to cook to good sized fish of about 1.75lbs each. I like to score the fish with a sharp knife on both sides. Then rub in salt pepper, olive oil and stuff the fish belly with rosemary and sage. Grey mullet smokes really well too. TOP TIPS. If the dorsal fin can be pulled away easily then the fish is cooked. A small hand full of wood chips loosely wrapped in foil gives a delicate but adequate flavour and helps keep the pan clean.

Here’s a couple of Arlington Rainbows I served up for friends at the weekend along with local picked samphire..Magic 🙂

Fly fishing tuition 2014

photo 2 photo 5

The tuition in 2014 is again doing really well and Again I’ve had the pleasure of introducing more anglers into the world of fly fishing with lots of positive feedback. Last week I meet father and son,Tony and Pete Elliott who came to me as absolute beginners. After a 3 hour session they were both getting to grips with the Overhead and Roll cast plus shooting line a few tips on casting in windy conditions and fly fishing river techniques. Here is what Pete had to say about the session and pictures of his dad Tony.

“Thanks man, was a good experience and I think, the beginning of a new hobby for dad”

Mullet go mad for a red bead Diawl Bach

Last night I took advantage of the warm evening and rising tide last on the Adur and landed 2 lovely Thin Lip Mullet Mullet on a Red Bead Diawl Bach fly. Unfortunately when landing the second fish the rod tip snapped so I had to go home otherwise it could have been a bonanza night as the fish were taking the fly quite confidently. Hopefully I can buy a new rod tip? Anyway check out the the fish and magic fly pics. Tight lines Howie

Quality Rainbows in a lovely location

Dragonfly 002

I was invited as a guest to an  SPS lake last Saturday. It was a warm and very sunny afternoon and so was not expecting to much under these conditions. However the water was clear and the trout started to rise. Before to long I was getting takes and follows from fish. Then the line tightened and  the rod was almost wrenched from my hand and after a great scrap I landed this beautiful, full finned rainbow followed shortly by another. One on a sinking Daddy and another on a red Buzzer. It is some time since I have uncounted such fine quality specimen rainbows. Congratulations on your specimen fish SPS. Seriously thinking of joining up next season.
