A blustery day made it difficult seeing the crafty takes on the fly. However we did manage to connect with some cracking fish.

Cracking Sunday morning, surface action on dry Daddies. Nothing happened at for the first 2 hours and was running out of clues to which fly to try next. I assumed as fish were not rising they must be deep and fished away with sunk flies. Sitting having a coffee and a think about leaving, a fish rose, then another. The water suddenly came alive although no visible hatch was going on. Looking through my box of dry flies I chose a big bushy Daddy. First cast. Wallop! A nice rainbow. Then 2 more and finished with a cracking brownie. Lesson learnt. Don’t keep flogging the water just sit, wait and watch.
The take

The prize

Took a few hours out from work this morning and headed off to my lakes before the rains arrive. Started fishing at 8am and after tying on a black tadpole pattern. Second cast I was into a good rainbow. The fish had been feasting on small, black, pond snails as on inspection the stomach was full. Within 2 hours I’d caught 4 rainbows. The biggest (pictured) was 5lbs. It pays to try different flies as the seasons and conditions change. Like the fish, we have to adapt to keep feeding and catching. I know the Tadpole fly is nothing like a snail except for the colour black but that can make all the difference. Who knows, maybe nextime green or bright pink ????

No wonder this fish pulled so hard. Check out the tail fin. This rainbow took a red midge on the drop. Smack in the scissors so luckily well hooked. Also Christened my new SKB, Pitsford Pirate fly line. Must admit, so far very impressed with the line which shoots really nicely.

I am definitely not a techie but I love modern materials and tackle. I remember the old beautifully hand crafted split cane rods. Then came glass fibre in it’s many colours. They were our pride and joy but I must admit you cannot ignore the performance and feel of the today’s carbon rods. At a fraction of the weight, even the multi section travel rods have really come on too and make up the majority of my armory. For instance check out the pics from last night’ powerfull Rainbow, testing my Daiwa Lexa, 4 piece, 5 eight to the max.
