Guided trout fishing days

I am very excited to have just joined a local fishing organisation which has some of the finest brown and rainbow trout fishing waters in Sussex. What is also great news I’ll be able to take guests. I’ll be adding this opportunity to my web page soon so anyone interested in a guided outing with a chance of a quality fighting fish should contact me either by phone or email. Lovely rainbow from Chalk Springs

First outing of the season awarded me with four nice hard fighting rainbows from Chalk Springs fishery. There’s one in the smoker as I speak to enjoy with dinner later together with a glass of white wine. I had to work hard for this last fish which finely took an Appetizer fly. Not tied one of those on for years. Just happen to have a couple in my fly box. It worked so well in the past when all else failed. To sum run up: Chalk Springs is still a very nicely kept fishery, well stocked and can be quite challenging.

My first Barramundi

Well I am back in India again. Now that the the Christmas and new year partying with friends as finally to settled down I have finally got down to some serious sea fishing at last. On my first outing I hooked into a good sized Red Snapper. Alas the fish did the usual and dived deep under rocks and finally spat the hook. Next day I got lucky and hooked into another fish. This time it fought differently and headed out into open water so I suspected this was another species. I was able to play and land the fish which turned out to be a Barramundi maybe just over 2lb. The fish was laying too far out to reach with the fly rod so I quickly set up my spinning gear which as you can see did the trick. Also added a picture of the fabulous location.

Fly tying top tip

Here is a great bit of kit for fly tiers. A baked bean tin, soaked in warm water to get the label off. It then doubles up as a fly holder/hanger/drier and a little dust bin for the waste materials. Here shown with a selection of large bass flies for a client. It will also accommodate smaller flies down to size 16.

Kind feedback from Paul Stephen

Hi Howard
Thanks for the link, also, really appreciated you taking the time out today to show me the places to fish on the Adur, your knowledge and expert advice will really help me to fish the way I was looking for.
We spoke about the different types of line, the fast sinking and the clear line you had, the fast sinking I think you said was a 8WTF but what was the clear one and are they both sea fly line and what would be best suitable for my rod.
Also if you do have time I would be interested in buying some clousers flies you make, they looked really good in the water.
Last thing, if I was to go down fishing on the Adur at Shoreham during the winter, what fish (if any) would I be able to fish for and on what type of fly.
Again many thanks for today
Adur
Regard
Paul Stephen

Fly fishing lessons

Today I had a great time with lovely bunch of guys. Jonathon Green, brother and father came along for a 3 hour beginners fly fishing session. They where about to go off to Scotland for a golf and fly fishing trip. Although they are accomplished golfers they had never picked up a fly rod before. They are going to fish the river Tay and so we spent some time on the river Adur. Although it does not have salmon or brown trout as in Scotland it is an ideal river to learn and practice ones casting and river craft skills.

Well done guys and tight lines. Howie

A Lovely October day at Duncton

Duncton Oct 16 006

Just back from a great day at Duncton Mill Fishery. With a fine bag of Rainbows. If any would be fly fishers want a great day out at an outstanding trout fishery then please get in touch. With 4,clear, spring feed lakes to stalk and roam around this is an outstanding venue in West Sussex managed by Martin Fleetwood. No I’m not getting paid to promote this fishery. I just want to share it with any learners requiring guidance and hopefully get involved with catching a trout or two. The condition and feistyness of his fish are to be admired. Anyone interested in a guided day out please contact me.

Positive client feedback (Thanks Clive)

Hi Howie,

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I learnt a lot. Thanks for the links, I’m convinced that the knot you tied for the Clouser contributed a lot towards catching those Schoolies – I’ll try and perfect that and give it a go next week when I’m on the Towi fishing for Sea Trout. I hope that your Aberystwyth trip goes well, the river that I was trying to remember was the Rheidol and you can get access to it through the local angling club, the following link should give you an idea of their waters, including the Ystwyth as well as the Rheidol : http://www.aber-angling.co.uk/index.php?f=data_permits&a=1 a lot depends on rainfall though.

I hope to give those marks that you pointed out a go and I’ll keep my eyes peeled for you when I go there to say hello. I’ll try a few different flies for the Mullet and when I get one I’ll let you know. In the meantime look after yourself and many thanks for a great afternoon.

All the best

Clive.
